Feeling safe can influence how people run.
Research behind Run My Way shows that safety, visibility and the surrounding environment can influence where and how people choose to run.
What influences where people run?
The research found differences in the factors women and men consider important when choosing where to run.
Small details can make a big difference.
Women were more likely than men to identify a range of safety-related factors as important when choosing where to run.
- 84% of women said good phone reception was important, compared with 63% of men.
- 70% of women take headphones on a run, compared with 55% of men.
- Women placed greater importance on the presence of other people around them while running.
- Familiarity, visibility, well-maintained paths and the surrounding environment can all affect how safe and confident people feel.
Creating safer and more inclusive sport.
Running should be an activity that is enjoyable, inclusive and accessible to everyone.
The Run My Way program is a Minns Labor Government initiative designed to help more women get active and importantly, feel safer while participating in sport.
By removing barriers and creating safer, more welcoming spaces, we can help more women participate in the benefits of running.
Running is experiencing a resurgence, especially among women, who see it as a way to get out into the fresh air and get fit.
But we also know that many women have said they've felt unsafe or experienced harassment on a run.
We're encouraging local sporting organisations and clubs to apply for the Run My Way grants and show us your new ideas on how to help people feel safer and more confident running in their local area.
Have an idea to make running safer?
If your running club or local sporting organisation has an idea that could help women, girls and gender diverse people feel safer and more confident when running, the Run My Way Grant Program could help turn that idea into action.
