Business leaders, community groups, school representatives and residents gathered recently for a smoking ceremony at the office of Warren Kirby MP, a new chapter for the Riverstone Electorate. The ceremony, performed by Darug elder, Uncle Danny Eastwood, assists to ward off bad spirits and to promote the protection and well-being of visitors.
During his welcome speech Mr Kirby encouraged all residents of the Riverstone electorate to visit the office and make use of the services.
“With this smoke my office becomes a place of welcome for all residents of the Riverstone electorate. It is a place of connection, whether that is to seek assistance, to advocate for community needs or simply to drop in and say G’day, my door is always open.”
This reflects the key message of Kirby’s inaugural speech to parliament, where he advocated “creating communities instead of only houses.”
As a base of operations for the State Member of Parliament, Mr Kirby’s office can assist with ageing and disability, community services, education, environment, health, housing, planning, police, transport and water.
